Your Local Instructorin Charlton
Charlton lies just west of Woolwich and a short drive from our Plumstead base. KGS teaches automatic driving lessons across Charlton, from the quieter streets of Charlton Village to the busy main roads that link South East London with the rest of the city.
Charlton is a great place to learn because it packs in so many types of road. There are steep residential hills rising from the river, busy shopping and retail areas along Woolwich Road, and the fast approach roads towards the Blackwall Tunnel. Learning here means you meet a wide range of situations early.
Lessons in Charlton are always taught by Satnam Singh Cheema in an automatic car, and every lesson lasts at least 2 hours, giving time to reach the right roads and practise properly.
Who we teach in Charlton
Many Charlton pupils want to build confidence on faster, busier roads, especially those planning to commute across London. Others are beginners who want to start on quieter hills and residential streets before tackling main routes.
Charlton is also a popular area for night and winter driving practice, as main roads are well lit and give experience of driving in traffic after dark.

Driving Challengesin Charlton
Woolwich Road (A206)
A busy route with retail parks, traffic lights and turning traffic, good for lane discipline and junction planning.
Blackwall Tunnel approach
The A102 carries heavy, fast traffic. Experienced learners can practise joining, lane choice and planning ahead. Beginners build up to it gradually.
Charlton hills
Roads climbing from the river towards Charlton Village are steep in places, giving practice in hill control and junctions on slopes.
Match-day traffic
Events at The Valley can bring extra pedestrians and congestion. Lessons are planned with this in mind.
Charlton Village
Narrow streets, parked cars and pedestrians help you practise slow-speed control and observation.
Why KGS
Why Learners in CharltonChoose KGS
One instructor, every lesson
KGS Driving School is an independent, one-instructor school. You learn with Satnam Singh Cheema from your first lesson to your last, so you never have to explain your progress to someone new or adjust to a different teaching style halfway through. He knows what you have covered, what you find difficult and what to focus on next.
Lessons adapted to you
Satnam is known for a calm, patient and helpful approach. Rather than following a rigid script, he adapts each lesson to the way you learn, building a personalised plan around your experience, progression and abilities. As one pupil put it, he approaches teaching in many ways to adapt to each learner.
Time to actually learn
Every lesson lasts at least 2 hours. Shorter lessons often end just as you settle in. Two hours gives you time to warm up, learn something new and practise it until it starts to feel natural, which makes better use of every pound you spend.
Prices you can see
Prices are shown openly: £38 per hour on weekdays between 9am and 5pm, and £40 per hour after 5pm and at weekends. A prepaid 10-hour block saves £15. Payment is by bank transfer at least 4 days before each lesson, so there is never any confusion on the day.
Trusted and checked
Satnam is fully DBS checked and teaches pupils of all ages from 17 upwards. Parents booking lessons for a son or daughter, and adults learning later in life, can feel reassured about who is sitting beside them in the car.
Automatic only
Why Learn inan Automatic
Every KGS lesson is taught in an automatic car. With no clutch to control and no gears to change, you can give your full attention to the road: observation, positioning, speed and planning ahead. For many learners, especially nervous drivers and people returning after a break, this makes driving feel far more manageable.
Passing your test in an automatic car gives you a licence to drive automatic cars only. For most drivers this is no longer a real limitation. Automatic, hybrid and electric cars are increasingly common on UK roads, and many new cars are now sold as automatics only.
Automatic cars are also well suited to London driving. Stop-start traffic, busy junctions and hill starts are simpler when the car handles the gears for you, leaving you calmer and more focused in exactly the situations where concentration matters most.
“Just passed my driving practical today, was very happy and I would like to spread the word that Satnam my instructor is very good at what he does. He approaches teaching in many ways to adapt to your experience, progression and abilities. I would like to say thank you, and recommend those who are looking for an instructor to try Satnam at KGS Driving School!”
