Overview
What Hazard Perception TrainingInvolve

What it is
Hazard perception training teaches you to scan the road, recognise early warning signs and predict what other road users might do, both for the theory test and for everyday driving.
Who it is for
It suits learners preparing for the hazard perception part of the theory test, learners who failed it, and drivers who want to improve their awareness on busy London roads.
When you need it
Ideally before your theory test, and throughout your practical lessons as you meet real hazards.
Why an instructor matters
Spotting a hazard one or two seconds earlier gives you far more time to react. That is the difference between a smooth slowdown and an emergency stop.
The cost of waiting
What HappensIf You Put It Off
Weak hazard perception affects both your test and your safety.
Failing the theory test
You must pass the hazard perception part as well as the multiple-choice part.
Late reactions
Seeing hazards late leads to harsh braking and near misses.
Busy roads feel chaotic
Without a scanning routine, busy streets feel overwhelming.
Practical test faults
Poor anticipation can lead to faults during the practical test.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Clicking repeatedly or randomly during clips
- Only looking at the car directly in front
- Not noticing clues like brake lights, parked cars or pedestrians near crossings
- Treating hazard perception as a test-only skill

In detail
What the LessonsCover
Hazard perception covers both the test format and real-world awareness.
How the test works
You watch 14 clips. 13 contain one developing hazard and one contains two. You score up to 5 points per hazard, with a pass mark of 44 out of 75.
Developing hazards
A developing hazard is something that would cause you to take action, such as slowing down or changing direction.
Common clues
Brake lights, a ball rolling into the road, a parked car with someone inside, a cyclist looking over their shoulder or a bus at a stop.
Commentary driving
Describing hazards out loud as you drive trains your eyes and brain to work together.
Urban hazards
South East London streets have buses, cyclists, pedestrians and side roads close together, ideal for practice.
Weather and darkness
Hazards are harder to spot at night and in rain, which is why awareness matters even more then.
Why KGS
Why Learners ChooseKGS Driving School
One instructor, every lesson
KGS Driving School is an independent, one-instructor school. You learn with Satnam Singh Cheema from your first lesson to your last, so you never have to explain your progress to someone new or adjust to a different teaching style halfway through. He knows what you have covered, what you find difficult and what to focus on next.
Lessons adapted to you
Satnam is known for a calm, patient and helpful approach. Rather than following a rigid script, he adapts each lesson to the way you learn, building a personalised plan around your experience, progression and abilities. As one pupil put it, he approaches teaching in many ways to adapt to each learner.
Time to actually learn
Every lesson lasts at least 2 hours. Shorter lessons often end just as you settle in. Two hours gives you time to warm up, learn something new and practise it until it starts to feel natural, which makes better use of every pound you spend.
Prices you can see
Prices are shown openly: £38 per hour on weekdays between 9am and 5pm, and £40 per hour after 5pm and at weekends. A prepaid 10-hour block saves £15. Payment is by bank transfer at least 4 days before each lesson, so there is never any confusion on the day.
Trusted and checked
Satnam is fully DBS checked and teaches pupils of all ages from 17 upwards. Parents booking lessons for a son or daughter, and adults learning later in life, can feel reassured about who is sitting beside them in the car.
Local roads, real experience
Lessons are based in Plumstead and cover the Royal Borough of Greenwich and the London Borough of Bexley, including Woolwich, Abbey Wood, Erith, Charlton, Belvedere, Greenwich, Blackheath and Bexleyheath. You practise on the busy high streets, residential roads, roundabouts and dual carriageways you will actually drive on once you have your licence.
Getting started is simple
Call Satnam on 07887 818521 or send a short enquiry with your name, phone number, the type of lesson you want and your area. He will reply personally to talk through what you need, agree a lesson time and confirm the price before you pay anything.
What to bring
Bring your driving licence (provisional or full) to every lesson, along with any glasses or contact lenses you need for driving. Wear comfortable, flat shoes that let you feel the pedals properly. Avoid heavy boots, high heels and flip-flops. If you have any medical condition that could affect your driving, mention it when you book so lessons can be planned with it in mind.
Automatic only
Why Learnin an Automatic
Every KGS lesson is taught in an automatic car. With no clutch to control and no gears to change, you can give your full attention to the road: observation, positioning, speed and planning ahead. For many learners, especially nervous drivers and people returning after a break, this makes driving feel far more manageable.
Passing your test in an automatic car gives you a licence to drive automatic cars only. For most drivers this is no longer a real limitation. Automatic, hybrid and electric cars are increasingly common on UK roads, and many new cars are now sold as automatics only.
Automatic cars are also well suited to London driving. Stop-start traffic, busy junctions and hill starts are simpler when the car handles the gears for you, leaving you calmer and more focused in exactly the situations where concentration matters most.
