Overview
What Refresher Driving LessonsInvolve

What it is
Refresher lessons are for drivers who already hold a full licence but have not driven for a while, or who feel their skills have slipped. Rather than starting from scratch, each lesson targets the specific areas you want to improve, in an automatic car.
Who it is for
They suit people returning to driving after months or years off the road, people who passed abroad or long ago, newly qualified drivers who stopped driving after their test, and anyone switching from manual to automatic.
When you need it
Common reasons include a new job that needs a car, moving to a busier area, a change in family circumstances, or simply realising that confidence has faded. If you feel nervous at the thought of driving alone, that is the right time to book.
Why an instructor matters
Driving again without support can turn a small loss of confidence into a real fear of driving. An instructor beside you lets you rebuild skills in a safe, controlled way, and points out any habits that have crept in, so you return to independent driving prepared rather than just hoping for the best.
The cost of waiting
What HappensIf You Put It Off
Avoiding driving tends to make the problem bigger, not smaller.
Confidence keeps shrinking
The longer you leave it, the more daunting busy roads, roundabouts and motorways can feel.
Rules have changed
Road layouts and parts of the Highway Code change over time. Driving on old assumptions can put you at risk.
Limited options
Not driving can narrow your choices for work, family commitments and getting around South East London.
Stressful first drives
Getting straight back into a car alone, on busy roads, can be stressful and unsafe for you and others.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Waiting until you absolutely must drive, then rushing back without practice
- Only practising on quiet roads and avoiding the situations that actually worry you
- Assuming nothing has changed since you last drove
- Relying on a passenger to talk you through busy junctions

In detail
What the LessonsCover
Refresher lessons can cover as much or as little as you need. These are the areas returning drivers most often ask for.
Roundabouts and complex junctions
Multi-lane roundabouts and busy junctions are among the most common worries. You practise lane choice, signalling and timing until they feel manageable.
Busy town driving
High streets, bus lanes, cyclists and pedestrians demand constant awareness. You practise on real local roads around Greenwich, Woolwich and Plumstead.
Parking
Parallel parking and bay parking are often the first skills to fade. Automatic cars make slow, precise control easier, which helps confidence return quickly.
Dual carriageways and faster roads
If you want to build up to faster roads, lessons can include joining, changing lanes and leaving dual carriageways safely.
Switching from manual to automatic
If you learned in a manual car, an automatic feels different at first, particularly when moving off and stopping. Refresher lessons help you adjust quickly.
Highway Code updates
Lessons are a good chance to catch up on changes to the Highway Code, such as the hierarchy of road users introduced in 2022.
Why KGS
Why Learners ChooseKGS Driving School
One instructor, every lesson
KGS Driving School is an independent, one-instructor school. You learn with Satnam Singh Cheema from your first lesson to your last, so you never have to explain your progress to someone new or adjust to a different teaching style halfway through. He knows what you have covered, what you find difficult and what to focus on next.
Lessons adapted to you
Satnam is known for a calm, patient and helpful approach. Rather than following a rigid script, he adapts each lesson to the way you learn, building a personalised plan around your experience, progression and abilities. As one pupil put it, he approaches teaching in many ways to adapt to each learner.
Time to actually learn
Every lesson lasts at least 2 hours. Shorter lessons often end just as you settle in. Two hours gives you time to warm up, learn something new and practise it until it starts to feel natural, which makes better use of every pound you spend.
Prices you can see
Prices are shown openly: £38 per hour on weekdays between 9am and 5pm, and £40 per hour after 5pm and at weekends. A prepaid 10-hour block saves £15. Payment is by bank transfer at least 4 days before each lesson, so there is never any confusion on the day.
Trusted and checked
Satnam is fully DBS checked and teaches pupils of all ages from 17 upwards. Parents booking lessons for a son or daughter, and adults learning later in life, can feel reassured about who is sitting beside them in the car.
Local roads, real experience
Lessons are based in Plumstead and cover the Royal Borough of Greenwich and the London Borough of Bexley, including Woolwich, Abbey Wood, Erith, Charlton, Belvedere, Greenwich, Blackheath and Bexleyheath. You practise on the busy high streets, residential roads, roundabouts and dual carriageways you will actually drive on once you have your licence.
Getting started is simple
Call Satnam on 07887 818521 or send a short enquiry with your name, phone number, the type of lesson you want and your area. He will reply personally to talk through what you need, agree a lesson time and confirm the price before you pay anything.
What to bring
Bring your driving licence (provisional or full) to every lesson, along with any glasses or contact lenses you need for driving. Wear comfortable, flat shoes that let you feel the pedals properly. Avoid heavy boots, high heels and flip-flops. If you have any medical condition that could affect your driving, mention it when you book so lessons can be planned with it in mind.
Automatic only
Why Learnin an Automatic
Every KGS lesson is taught in an automatic car. With no clutch to control and no gears to change, you can give your full attention to the road: observation, positioning, speed and planning ahead. For many learners, especially nervous drivers and people returning after a break, this makes driving feel far more manageable.
Passing your test in an automatic car gives you a licence to drive automatic cars only. For most drivers this is no longer a real limitation. Automatic, hybrid and electric cars are increasingly common on UK roads, and many new cars are now sold as automatics only.
Automatic cars are also well suited to London driving. Stop-start traffic, busy junctions and hill starts are simpler when the car handles the gears for you, leaving you calmer and more focused in exactly the situations where concentration matters most.
