Overview

What Beginner Driving LessonsInvolve

Learner driver's hands on the steering wheel of an automatic car

What it is

Beginner lessons are for people who have never driven, or have only had a handful of goes in a car park. Every lesson is in an automatic car, so there is no clutch control or gear changing to learn. That leaves your attention free for the things that actually decide whether you pass: steering, observation, positioning, judging speed and reading the road ahead.

Who it is for

These lessons suit anyone aged 17 or over who holds a provisional licence, from school leavers to adults who put off learning for years. If you feel anxious about starting, that is completely normal, and Satnam’s calm, patient approach is designed for exactly that situation.

When you need it

The best time to start is as soon as your provisional licence arrives. Starting with 2-hour lessons gives you time to settle in, learn something new and practise it until it feels natural, rather than stopping just as it begins to click.

Why an instructor matters

Learning with a family member can build bad habits and frayed nerves. A dedicated instructor teaches to the standard examiners expect from day one, spots small faults before they become habits and adapts each lesson to your progress, so you are not paying to repeat things you already do well.

The cost of waiting

What HappensIf You Put It Off

Putting off lessons, or learning without a clear structure, rarely saves money. It usually costs more in the long run.

More hours, more cost

Lessons without a plan tend to repeat the same ground. Every repeated hour adds to the total you pay before you are ready for your test.

Habits that fail tests

Poor mirror checks, drifting lane position and late braking feel harmless at first, but they are among the faults that lead to failed tests and are hard to unlearn later.

Confidence that never builds

Long gaps between lessons mean you spend the first part of every lesson relearning what you did last time, and confidence stays low.

Missed independence

Every month without a licence is another month relying on lifts, buses and trains for work, study and family life.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Booking single short lessons that end before anything sinks in
  • Choosing a manual car without needing one, then spending hours on clutch control
  • Practising with friends or family who teach outdated or incorrect techniques
  • Booking a test date before the instructor agrees you are ready

Benefits

What You GetFrom Every Lesson

Faster progress

No clutch or gears means fewer things to master, so many learners reach test standard with less to think about.

Safer from the start

You learn correct observation and hazard awareness from your very first lesson, not as an afterthought.

Skills that last

Lessons focus on understanding why you do something, so good habits stay with you long after your test.

Clear, upfront costs

£38 per hour on weekdays, £40 after 5pm and at weekends, with £15 off a 10-hour block. No hidden extras.

One instructor throughout

The same instructor every lesson means no repeating yourself and no starting over with someone new.

Peace of mind

Satnam is fully DBS checked, so you and your family know who you are learning with.

In detail

What the LessonsCover

Here is what a typical journey from beginner to test day covers in an automatic car around South East London.

The car controls

You start with the basics: seat and mirror set-up, the accelerator and brake, using the gear selector (park, reverse, neutral and drive), the handbrake and indicators. In an automatic car, moving off and stopping smoothly is mostly about gentle, controlled use of the pedals.

Junctions and roundabouts

Turning left and right, emerging from side roads and approaching roundabouts are where most of the learning happens. You practise the routine of mirrors, signal, position, speed and look until it becomes automatic, on real local roads in Plumstead, Woolwich and beyond.

Manoeuvres

You learn the manoeuvres the driving test can include: parallel parking, bay parking (forwards and in reverse) and pulling up on the right before reversing. Automatic cars make slow, precise control much easier, which takes a lot of the stress out of manoeuvres.

Busier and faster roads

As your confidence grows you progress to dual carriageways, busy high streets and complex junctions, building the judgement you need for the variety of roads found across the Royal Borough of Greenwich and the London Borough of Bexley.

Independent driving

Part of the practical test involves driving independently, following directions from a sat nav or road signs. You practise this in your lessons so it feels routine by test day.

Automatic licence explained

If you pass your test in an automatic car, your licence lets you drive automatic cars only. For most drivers today this is no restriction at all, as automatic, hybrid and electric cars are increasingly common.

Why KGS

Why Learners ChooseKGS Driving School

One instructor, every lesson

KGS Driving School is an independent, one-instructor school. You learn with Satnam Singh Cheema from your first lesson to your last, so you never have to explain your progress to someone new or adjust to a different teaching style halfway through. He knows what you have covered, what you find difficult and what to focus on next.

Lessons adapted to you

Satnam is known for a calm, patient and helpful approach. Rather than following a rigid script, he adapts each lesson to the way you learn, building a personalised plan around your experience, progression and abilities. As one pupil put it, he approaches teaching in many ways to adapt to each learner.

Time to actually learn

Every lesson lasts at least 2 hours. Shorter lessons often end just as you settle in. Two hours gives you time to warm up, learn something new and practise it until it starts to feel natural, which makes better use of every pound you spend.

Prices you can see

Prices are shown openly: £38 per hour on weekdays between 9am and 5pm, and £40 per hour after 5pm and at weekends. A prepaid 10-hour block saves £15. Payment is by bank transfer at least 4 days before each lesson, so there is never any confusion on the day.

Trusted and checked

Satnam is fully DBS checked and teaches pupils of all ages from 17 upwards. Parents booking lessons for a son or daughter, and adults learning later in life, can feel reassured about who is sitting beside them in the car.

Local roads, real experience

Lessons are based in Plumstead and cover the Royal Borough of Greenwich and the London Borough of Bexley, including Woolwich, Abbey Wood, Erith, Charlton, Belvedere, Greenwich, Blackheath and Bexleyheath. You practise on the busy high streets, residential roads, roundabouts and dual carriageways you will actually drive on once you have your licence.

Getting started is simple

Call Satnam on 07887 818521 or send a short enquiry with your name, phone number, the type of lesson you want and your area. He will reply personally to talk through what you need, agree a lesson time and confirm the price before you pay anything.

What to bring

Bring your driving licence (provisional or full) to every lesson, along with any glasses or contact lenses you need for driving. Wear comfortable, flat shoes that let you feel the pedals properly. Avoid heavy boots, high heels and flip-flops. If you have any medical condition that could affect your driving, mention it when you book so lessons can be planned with it in mind.

Automatic only

Why Learnin an Automatic

Every KGS lesson is taught in an automatic car. With no clutch to control and no gears to change, you can give your full attention to the road: observation, positioning, speed and planning ahead. For many learners, especially nervous drivers and people returning after a break, this makes driving feel far more manageable.

Passing your test in an automatic car gives you a licence to drive automatic cars only. For most drivers this is no longer a real limitation. Automatic, hybrid and electric cars are increasingly common on UK roads, and many new cars are now sold as automatics only.

Automatic cars are also well suited to London driving. Stop-start traffic, busy junctions and hill starts are simpler when the car handles the gears for you, leaving you calmer and more focused in exactly the situations where concentration matters most.
